Three Wildlife Computers miniPATs were tagged on three Antarctic toothfish
individuals on 10th Feb 2015 , and were released by the Korean Scientific Observers
on the FV Kingstar. The weight of the tag was only 60 grams, but it can operate
up to 2 years. Tags were programmed to record all variables including depth (pressure),
temperature and light level every 15 sec for their detailed behavior study.
One full year later (Feb 10, 2016), the same observer recovered it on the fish just 4.26 km
away from the released position (Figure 3). At the time of recaptured, the fish grew 1cm
and the condition was not good. The fish was abnormally underweight. The tag was
delivered to National Institute of Fisheries Science in Korea after the scientific research
cruise. Physically recovering the tag allowed access to full data time series on the tag
rather than the summarized data transmitted via satellite. The tag recorded more than
2,000,000 sets of data spanning 366 days.
TNS Industries Inc. supported this activities in the Division 58.4.1 in 2015 and 2016. -
NOTICE Additional Scientific Research
The Greenstar, operated by TNS Industries Inc., conducted Scientific research
in the Subarea 88.3 of the CCAMLR Convention area. She performed it for 5 years
starting from 2015/16 to 2019/20.
This research plan was first submitted to the Commission for the CCAMLR
in 2011, consequently endorsed by all members in 2015.
During Year 1-2, the Greenstar conducted its activities alone, but New Zealand
and Ukraine joined in Year 3-5 as a multi-national research.
We had a great collaboration with NZ and UKR to collect and to analyse the
data either at the sea and shore for 5 years.
Including the research activities conducted by the Kingstar in the
58.4.1 & 58.4.2 (approved by all CCAMLR members in 2014),
TNS Industries Inc. sent two vessels to two areas in the Antarctic Ocean.
These were the first and second research activities that Korea tried to
contribute on scientific data to the CCAMLR.
TNS Industries Inc. supported these activities with two vessels, Kingstar and Greenstar. -
NOTICE Conducted scientific research on bottom fishing environmental impact assessment in the Southwest Atlantic
In accordance with Recommendations for the UN General Assembly (On the workshop
to a discuss the implementation of para. 80 and 83 to 87 of resolution 61/105 and
para. 117 and 119 to 127 of resolution 64/7 on sustainable fisheries), it advised an accounting
by high sea bottom fishing states to the global community of how well they have lived up to
their agreed obligations to protect and conserve vulnerable deep-sea marine habitats and
ecosystems.
High Sea Bottom Fishing States included Australia, China, France, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand,
Portugal, Spain, the Russian Federation, and South Korea.
Therefore, the Kingstar operated by TNS Industries Inc. conducted scientific research in
the High Sea 41(Southwest Atlantic Ocean) on April in 2015 to provide the information on the
relationship between bottom fishing gears and sea-floor.
